Bat For Lashes will release a new oracle deck this summer.
The project has been pieced together alongside London wellness brand She’s Lost Control, and fulfils a long-held ambition from Bat For Lashes. The songwriter – real name Natasha Khan – began designing the deck in 2020, and it’s dubbed the Motherwick oracle deck.
Set to be released shortly, the deck sits somewhere between the Wild Unknown Tarot Deck and the Oblique Strategies cards famously designed by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt. She explains…
“I began drawing the images that would become Motherwitch at the start of lockdown in March 2020, whilst I was in the early months of pregnancy…”
“The world was falling apart, and whilst we huddled inside, I felt I was turning more and more animal every day. My body was changing, my mother instincts prickling, I was afraid of the future for my baby, but also so excited that finally I was to become a mother.”
“Images started to circle around my mind and dreams… Female characters in all their different guises and glory: Witches, sisters, sirens, mothers, angels, death hags. I was trying to make sense of my evolving womanhood and conjuring as many archetypes as I could to help me on my journey of transformation.”
Available to order now, Bat For Lashes wanted the deck to absorb the influence of female painters and mystics, with Natasha Khan citing the likes of Hilma Af Klint, Agnes Pelton and Agnes Martin as points of inspiration.
She comments:
“I believe if you ask the cards a question, they can give you insights that perhaps you would have been blind to had you not handed over yourself to the great mysteries. They can be tools that help with creative work, blocks and desires, questions about personal relationships, how to view something differently. They can also act as a balm and facilitator, as they possess the essence of the mother, a loving guide and protector in times of difficulty.”
