However few expected the producer's work to enter the political sphere. Barack Obama made his reputation in Chicago, and retains a strong affection for the Windy City.
Penning a letter of tribute, the President of the United States argued that Frankie Knuckles was "a trailblazer in his field" whose work "helped open minds and bring people together".
Handed to David Morales, the DJ has now shared the letter on his Facebook page.
