Canadian ensemble BADBADNOTGOOD have today shared new single ‘Take What’s Given’ featuring Houston riser reggie, out via XL Recordings.
‘Take What’s Given’ – recorded over multiple sessions at LA’s Valentine Studios last year – sees the band take a countrified, rootsy detour, as horns, harmonies, reggie’s gospel-infused croon and jazzy chords coalesce into a sunlit spiritual.
“We were doing a couple sessions around the time of Coachella 2022 and ended up having reggie by the studio. We were struck by his unique artistry and energy, and he played us some of his unreleased music that was just amazing. The groove for ‘Take What’s Given’ came together while we were messing around during setup, and we were just having fun with it until reggie started freestyling what became the lyrics. It quickly became an infectious song and we ended up laying it down within a couple takes. Stylistically it’s super different than anything we’ve put out before but we had such a fun time playing it and it was stuck in our heads for a year while we worked on other stuff.”
This release from BADBADNOTGOOD follows a string of one-off singles with collaborators including Charlotte Day Wilson on ‘Sleeper‘, and Jonah Yano on ‘the ordinary is ordinary because it ordinarily repeats‘. BADBADNOTGOOD also contributed to Daniel Caesar’s 2023 album ‘Never Enough‘ and worked with rising artist Elmiene on an edit of his single ‘Marking My Time‘.
BADBADNOTGOOD are set to return to the stage in 2024, having confirmed appearances at Cross The Tracks Festival in London, Primavera Sound in Barcelona, Bonnaroo and a headline performance at Istanbul’s Zorlu Performing Arts Center.
With BADBADNOTGOOD in and out of the studio, expect more offerings this year.
