Reports of rumours of speculation are flooding across the web, with suggestions that The Smiths could reform.
The Smiths couldn’t reform… could they? The seminal indie outfit tore themselves apart in 1987, with Morrissey subsequently battling Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce in the courts over unsettled contractual wrangles.
Yet rumours have always dogged the much loved Manchester group. This morning (April 27th) Music-News published a story which stated the following:
“The legendary songwriting partnership comprising of musical luminaries Morrissey and Marr are set to make a return after finding common ground” they wrote. “It will be the first time that Manchester’s independent monoliths, who were signed to London’s Rough Trade label, have graced a stage since their acrimonious split in 1987”.
The report continues: “This announcement comes after a source revealed that the 80s icons had been in talks to perform with a well-known promoter. The decision was said to have been made after fellow Mancunians, The Stone Roses, gave in and reformed”.
The report has caused an avalanche of speculation online, with ‘#smiths’ trending on Twitter. No strange to social network mischief, Johnny Marr recently wrote: “Hey Everybody !! Amazing news !….My amp is fixed ! Johnny.”
Oh Johnny… you tease.
More on this as it progresses.
