Cryptic messages from Murdoc are fuelling speculation that Gorillaz could be set to split.
Returning last year, Gorillaz finally managed to match their multi-media approach with live performance. Taking off across America, the band enjoyed enormous success in the United States – an area previously resistant to their charms.
Damon Albarn even completed a new album on the road, with ‘The Fall’ documenting a life spent flitting between hotel rooms. Interviews at the time cast doubt on the future of the group, with the songwriter insisted that he wanted to take a break and work on new projects.
Now comments from Gorillaz character Murdoc are fuelling speculation that the group could be over. Writing on Twitter, Murdoc said: “Something special has just floated up on my island. A small toy trumpet to herald a big announcement. Think I’ll be blowing that tomorrow.”
Continuing, he wrote: “‘Gorillaz are TEN. Ten years old, eh? T.E.N. What’s that stand for? The End is Nigh…!”
Gorillaz are currently inactive, with Damon Albarn completing a number of different projects. The songwriter led a team of dance producers to Africa, resulting in the ‘Kinshasa One Two’ project.
Alongside this, Damon Albarn recently confirmed a one off show from The Good, The Bad & The Queen. A supergroup featuring members of The Clash and Afrobeat legend Tony Allen, the band will play a show later this year.
Speaking to Q Magazine last year, Damon Albarn confirmed that he wanted to record an album under his own name. “I’d like to do a record with my own name on it. That’s the next one I want to make. I don’t know if I could bear to start a band from scratch again” he said.
“I don’t know what kind of record it will be but I’ve got an idea about a club that no one goes to, so maybe it will be my ’empty club culture’ record.”
