Irish alt-pop artist April returns with new single ‘54321’.
Releasing a string of stellar independent bops, April was head-hunted by Atlantic Records, releasing her excellent EP ‘When It Comes To You’ earlier this year.
The release was part of a major shift in April’s life, with a move to London finding the artist immersing herself in the city’s club scene. Absorbing new sounds into her creative practice, incoming mixtape ‘STARLANE’ broadens April’s sound still further.
New single ‘54321’ is a mission statement. Dipping into head-bopping DNB rhythms, she cites PinkPantheress as a key influence, but the sound is all her own.
Crafted alongside songwriter Matt Maltese, April’s voice carries a kind of melancholic insouciance. She comments…
“‘54321′ is more about me knowing what I want from someone rather than being hopeless and helpless in love. Matt Maltese sent me a recording of the piano chords over a rough drum beat made by Danny Casio. I wrote the melody and lyrics, recorded vocals on my phone because my interface wasn’t working, and sent them back to Danny to produce it up. He emailed it to us a few days later and I was like ‘woah, time to shake some ass I guess!'”
“It embodies the more playful, electronic sound I’m mixing in with my songwriting, and is my take on the drum ‘n’ bass trend that’s returning to music right now, inspired of course by artists like PinkPantheress.”
Tune in now.
