Anna B Savage has shared a new live clip of her song 'Chelsea Hotel #3'.
The songwriter has signed to City Slang, with her debut album set to land later in the year.
'Chelsea Hotel #3' references the Leonard Cohen song of (almost) the same name, and uses this as a jumping off point for an exploration of female sexuality.
It's a song about unpicking internalised 'rules', and learning to embrace your body as your own.
"'Wank More' was my 2016 New Year’s Resolution," she explains. "It was part of my need to battle all the internalised bullshit I had ingested about women."
"I’ve spent the last few years actively unlearning things I spent my first twenty years passively being fed. Like how women are sexualised, but never allowed to be sexual, they are the object (sometimes even an object). It took me until 21 to start masturbating, even longer to realise that sex was also for me (groundbreaking, I know) and that I had agency and could and should ask for things. It’s wildly frustrating and sad."
This live clip was shot in the Barbican conservatory, and the building as a whole has long been a magnet for creativity.
"I’ve been using the Barbican as a writing spot for a few years now," says Anna. "It has become a little haven. I used spent some time in The Conservatory when I worked for a terrarium company. Seeing monstera with aerial roots hanging three stories down, with leaves bigger than my torso was an absolute joy."
"So, for me, the contrast between the brutalism and this lush, verdant greenery felt like a perfect spot to do a session. And the perfect excuse to be in The Conservatory with no one else in there, which is a real privilege. Thank you to (the lovely) John who put it all together. Ricky (our DOP, who is also an excellent botanist) and I spent our day salivating over the plants between takes."
