American singer Andrew WK has denied being a creation of the music industry, claiming rumours around him are false.
Andrew WK arrived in a blaze of publicity in 2001. Debut album ‘I Get Wet’ was big, dumb, fun recalling the glory years of party hard rock ‘n’ roll.
With his ripped jeans and white t-shirt the singer was a no frills riposte to the music industry. However almost immediately rumours began circulating which suggested that Andrew WK was not quite the man fans believed him to be.
Centring on his relationship with executive producer Steev Mike, some suggest that Andrew WK is a role crafted by the industry.
In a new statement Andrew WK has taken the unusual step of categorically denying being a “victim of mind-control” since the release of his debut album.
“Since 2001, I have been accused of being part of a conspiracy in which I knowingly entered into a contract with creative directors called Steev Mike, who proceeded to invent a new identity for me to perform under,” he wrote on his official website.
“I’m here to say this is simply not true and a gross exaggeration of easily explainable and common-place music industry practices.”
Andrew WK went on to say that he does “work with people who choose not to include their whole names or real names in the credits” of his songs, but that “taking advice and guidance from other people doesn’t mean I’m a victim of mind-control”.
The singer finished with a simple message to fans: “Andrew WK is about partying and doing what you want! We want fun, and that really is what I am about.”
