Superstar retro soul diva Amy Winehouse has been cleared of common assault after an incident dating back to September.
At a show last year in Berkeley Square, London Amy Winehouse was accused of striking out at a fan. The singer was performing at the venue, and allegedly reacted after the concert goer had attempted to take her picture.
This wasn’t the first time Winehouse had struck out at a show. During a headline slot at Glastonbury the singer punched a fan in the front row, alleging that she had been groped while performing.
That incident was not followed by police action, but the fan involved in the Berkeley Square confrontation immediately contacted the authorities. However Amy Winehouse could not be brought to trial as the singer eloped to St Lucia.
Making a new home for herself on the Caribbean island, Amy Winehouse recently returned to Britain and was almost immediately arrested.
The singer was taken to court on July 24th, but proceedings did not last long. Statements were taken from witnesses, but after hearing the evidence, District Judge Timothy Workman pointed out that all but two of the witnesses in the case had been drunk at the time of the incident.
Workman then referred to medical reports, claiming that they did not show “the sort of injury that often occurs when there is a forceful punch to the eye”, reports BBC News.
A clearly relieved Amy Winehouse left the courthouse immediately afterwards, pausing only to tell the huddled media outside that “I’m relieved. I’m going home.”
This is the first piece of good news Amy Winehouse has had in a while. The singer had been confirmed as performing at her label Island’s 50th birthday bash, but was forced to cancel. The ‘Back To Black’ star has been busy working on her new album, which has been beset by delays and behind the scenes ruptures.
