A new Amy Winehouse biopic is in the works, it is being reported.
The venture has been the subject of speculation for some time, with Variety reporting that the motion picture has been given the go-ahead.
Sam Taylor-Johnson – who also directed Nowhere Boy, and on a less musical tip 50 Shades Of Grey – is in line to direct the film, which is using the title Back To Black. Matt Greenhalgh has been tapped up to write, while the production team lines up Studiocanal, Alison Owen, Debra Hayward, and Tracey Seaward.
Of course, Amy’s legacy has been an arena for legal rows, but the new film does seemingly contain the full support of the Amy Winehouse Estate, including the late singer’s father Mitchell Winehouse.
Amy Winehouse died in 2011, at the cruelly young age of 27. The documentary Amy was constructed by Asaf Kapadia, a brutally emotional experience that was criticised by Mitchell Winehouse but nonetheless won an Oscar.
London’s Design Museum recently hosted an in-depth exhibition on Amy’s life, and her vivid sense of style; the singer’s 2007 Glastonbury set was also released on vinyl this summer.
