Against Me! Frontman Is Transgender

Tom Gabel plans to live as a woman

Against Me! frontman Tom Gabel has revealed that she has gender dysphoria, and plans to live as a woman.

There aren’t many taboos left in rock music. However gender dysphoria – discontent with the gender you were assigned at birth – remains very much in the shadows.

So it’s to her credit that Against Me! frontman Tom Gabel has been so open about her condition. In an interview with Rolling Stone recently, the singer revealed that she has gender dysphoria and plans to live her life as a woman.

Tom Gabel plans to re-name herself Laura Jane Grace, and has begun the process of transition. The singer will remain married to her wife Heather, who has seemingly been supportive of the decision.

“For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news,” Gabel explained. “But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.”

Transgender remains a topic seldom explored in rock music. Beyond the career of Wayne / Jayne County, Tom Gabel is the first major rock musician to openly discuss gender dysphoria.

“I’m going to have embarrassing moments,” the singer explained, “and that won’t be fun. But that’s part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.”
