American rockers Aerosmith have revealed for the first time that they almost split last year.
Aerosmith are one of the most enduring success stories in rock music. The hard rockers formed in the mid 70s, and have enjoyed plenty of ups and downs.
However last year the band were pushed to the brink. Singer Steve Tyler’s continued drug problems and unpredictable behaviour forced Aerosmith to cancel a series of shows with fans fearing for their future.
Now bass player Tom Hamilton has revealed that the group were forced to have ‘crisis talks’ after continued rows. Aerosmith were almost forced to split, with Steve Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry at loggerheads.
“There was management there. (We were) all lawyered up,” the bass player told the Boston Herald. “There was a lot of sort of reconciling and processing feelings and stuff. Everyone said how they wanted things to be in the future and it became clear that, for everybody, the coolest thing to do would be to resolve things with the band.”
“The phone was ringing. People wanted to see the band. We finally realised, even with all the bullshit flying around, that there was a beautiful thing right there if we had enough sense to grab it.”
Hamilton also revealed that Steve Tyler was forced to head into rehab in an effort to help Aerosmith survive. “(It was an) intensive sobriety treatment (programme),” he added. “He took a really big step and it was really great.”
Aerosmith are set to tour Europe later this year.
