Closure threatened stations 6Music and the Asian Network have scooped major prizes at the Sony Radio Academy Awards.
Earlier this year the BBC shocked fans by placing the future of radio stations 6Music and the Asian Network under review. Sparking waves of protest, the move was widely condemned by some note worthy fans.
In a rare message to fans, David Bowie revealed that he was appalled by the move. Meanwhile listening figures have surged as supporters aim to make their feelings known.
Praised by those in the industry, both stations picked up important awards at the Sony Radio Academy ceremony last night (May 10th). BBC 6Music presenter Jarvis Cocker won the Sony DAB Rising Star Award, in honour of his Sunday afternoon show.
The genial Pulp frontman was joined on the winner’s podium by Adam And Joe, whose program won the best comedy title.
Meanwhile, Asian Network DJ Nihal took the best speech programme category. Congratulations to all!
Jarvis Cocker spoke at the ceremony, telling journalists that: “6 Music is never going to be the biggest station in the UK but it would be devastating if it was to close.
“6 Music isn’t going to change the world, it just wants to make it a bit nicer.”
Meanwhile, Adam And Joe star Adam Buxton joked: “My children went to school and boasted about the fact that their dad was on Radio 1 and knew Chris Moyles. When the children found out that wasn’t true and, in fact, the station that dad was on was closing, it was very disappointing.”
The big winner on the night however was Radio 4, which scooped a total of six awards.
