65daysofstatic have spoken to ClashMusic about their collaboration with Robert Smith.
A cult group in the UK, 65daysofstatic were suddenly given a profile boost thanks to the patronage of The Cure’s Robert Smith. The iconic frontman is a fan of the band, and personally invited them to join a tour of North America.
Exposed to thousands of new fans, 65daysofstatic grew accustomed to playing enormous venues. Returning to Britain, the band began work on the vast song structures of their new album ‘We Were Exploding Anyway’.
An artistic success, the largely instrumental band hooked up with Robert Smith on the track ‘Close To Me’. Speaking to ClashMusic, 65daysofstatic frontman Paul Wolinski explained that vocal excursions are rare on their music.
“It’s not that as a rule we wouldn’t do it again but there just never seems like there’s enough space in our songs,” he said. “It would also severely limit our live show. That is what we are pouring all our energies into at the moment and is what we are looking forward to building on more and more as time goes on.”
Continuing, the frontman explained that ‘We Were Exploding Anyway’ has proved troublesome to perform live. “We learnt an awful lot from the record and we’re incredibly proud of the songs. But we went down this path and thought it was where we wanted to be” he admitted.
“We were left with touring a record for eighteen months of which we could only play half of the songs live. We built them in the studio from so many different things; five grand pianos and a string section, things that we couldn’t recreate without cheating.”
