Korean-Australian collective 1300 – comprised of rappers rako and goyo, rapper/vocalist DALI HART, producer-singer Nerdie and producer pokari.sweat – have shared their high-octane new single ‘Lalaland’; their first since the release of a debut mixtape last year.
Newly-signed to UK label Eastern Margins – an incubator for East and South-East Asian diasporic talent – 1300 deliver a mind-bending piece of overdriven club-rap. Recorded in a cabin in the Blue Mountains, ‘Lalaland’ captures a restless, disordered energy within a crew embracing and dissecting their polyglot identities.
Of the song, 1300 say: “It’s hard, nasty, confusing, it’s very 1300…the big 808 behind it is what gives it a modern hip-hop feel, electro and acid-like sounds that felt appropriate.”
Watch the trippy, Blair Witch-inspired visual co-directed with Raghav Rampal…
With co-signs by the likes of Danny Brown and Theophilus London, 1300 occupy a space within Australia’s hybrid and progressive scene alongside acts like Genesis Owusu and Ninajirachi. The Sydney collective are gearing up to release more music in the new year. Watch this space.
