The new wave of guitar groups from Birmingham are bonded by their individuality, by their lack of parallel themes.
It's almost as if to re-invent Birmingham they had to dig inwards, to use their imagination and project outwards. Bad taste becomes good taste, colour replaces monochrome and rhythm ties itself around melody, with each group seeming to burst into vivid, fluorescent glory.
Troumaca are named in honour of a Caribbean island, and have more in common with bass exploration than indie navel gazing. That shuffle in the rhythm section, that ability to lay down a solid groove is what marks them out – Troumaca are a dance band, something to be absorbed, experienced rather than studied.
New cut 'Layou' raises expectations for the band's debut album, with the track recently receiving the visual treatment. Psychedelic in the sense that it uses colour to play on the unconscious mind, it's a beguiling fantasy which comes draped in colour.
As the band themselves put it: "Troumaca is our muse. The musical and familial heritage transport us to our own world."
Watch it now.
