Tribes Ep. 1: Discwoman

Exploring an inspirational dance collective...

Dance culture has always been about inclusion.

From those debauched disco sessions through to the birth of house and techno, electronic music was used as a way to party down the barriers.

Yet even within club culture itself, barriers still remain. Gender diversity is still rare, with big name festivals and influential clubs still relying on the same old – predominantly male – faces. Which is where DISCWOMAN come in. A New York-based all-female collective, their aim is to promote gender diversity within club culture by booking the freshest talent, the hottest producers, and throwing the sickest raves.

Smirnoff Sound Collective recently launched its Tribes series, a video platform aimed at showcasing interesting ideas promoting inclusivity within dance music. DISCWOMAN immediately grabbed their attention, and the team followed them to Mexico City as they brought their message to the world.

The resulting visuals are totally inspiring. A celebration of new talent, of gender diversity, and of the key role women play in club culture, the video features special appearances from the likes of The Black Madonna, Star Eyes, Demian Licht, Sandunes, Nicole Moudaber, and Ninasonik.
