‘Indie disco’ is just a contradiction in terms.
Indie clubs rarely involve much dancing, and when they do it tends to be of the post-ironic variety. Fans of obscure labels gather in small groups, crowded in corners avoiding eye contact with other people.
Yet somehow, they persist. To the indoctrinated, the indie disco is a staple of the scene allowing fans to re-visit albums they were more than likely listening to in the house a few hours earlier.
Returning Irish group The Divine Comedy have made more than a few indie dancefloor classics in their time, and the band are set to pay tribute to this with their new single ‘At The Indie Disco’.
Available from May 23rd, the single is a wry and acerbic observation on the cliques and glamour of the indie club. Groups of friends sit in their usual spot (underneath the picture of Morrissey) while the DJ plays some classic cuts.
Taken from their new album ‘Bang Goes The Knighthood’ the track is a sweet and funny tribute to a national institution.
