Complexity doesn't have to be intimidating.
Too often, fans are put off by accusations of intelligence in music. After all, critical platitudes most often come cloaked in terms such as 'honest' or 'authentic'.
Yet Tartufi manage to be both thrillingly complex and enticingly beautiful. Initially a duo, the near telepathic interplay of Lynne Angel and Brian Gorman caused their work with Southern to be widely sought after. Expanding to a trio with the introduction of Benjamin Thorne on bass, Tartufi haven't lost their sparse, beautiful nature.
New album 'These Factory Days' is set to be released next month, and features some of the group's most ferociously intelligent and pleasingly immediate material to date.
By way of a preview, ClashMusic are able to bring you the video for 'Underwater'. Thin, wiry guitar lines interweaving to produce something solid, the track nods towards math-rock while never quite falling into any one genre. The heavenly vocals seem to pull you in, with the track able to unfurl and evolve on its own terms.
A remarkably succinct, idiosyncratic document 'Underwater' rises and rises in a euphoric collision of ideas and emotion.
