Brooklyn songstress Sharon Van Etten has shared the video for her first single, from her forthcoming album 'Are We There'.
The video is shot, written and directed by Michael Palmieri and inspired by the film 'Cleo from 5 to 7' by Agnes Varda. Palmieri stated the lyrics immediately evoked images of Varda’s provocative gem, a movie that used mirrors to imply ideas of self-obsession.
This is well reflected (arf!) in ‘Taking Chances’ where we see a subtly confident Sharon Van Etten choosing tarot cards, soundtracked by a fat, driving double bass.
As the ‘Queen of Cups’ is revealed and other cards are laid in front of her, her luck takes a turn for the worse – landing the 'Hanged Man' as we hit a forceful chorus.
Further into her hazy, confessional narrative she is grasped and imprisoned behind a wall of constricting hands and finally re-enters the room only to see herself on the other side of the table.
Watch it now.
