Tom Williams is perhaps best known as a singer, as a songwriter.
But recent mini-album 'New Guitar' flips this on its head. A stark solo piece written over a two year period, it extensively features the instrument which gave the record its title.
After this, footage was shot aiming to build a world around the track. At the end, Tom and the director shot a very simple clip without anyone's knowledge – and Clash has the premiere.
The clip which accompanies 'She's Everything' is a fascinating, beautifully shot insight into Tom Williams' working methods, both intimate and extremely revealing.
Director Jake Cunningham commented:
"When you listen to 'She's Everything', you can hear just how intimate the song is, both lyrically and musically, it's like eavesdropping on Tom writing in his diary. When we got everyone together in the studio to make the video we had planned out, suddenly it felt like we were losing that intimacy by putting an artifice around the song. So while rehearsing and practising before the originally planned shoot, Tom and I decided to quickly film a video that no one else knew about, maintaining that closeness we were originally hoping for. Looking back, people may think that we had perhaps seen 'Birdman' a few too many times, and it's nice to think of us being that clever; but really we ended up with something far more akin to the video for Weezer's 'The Sweater Song', and personally, I think I prefer that anyway. "
