A Polish production duo, Skalpel – real names Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudlo – have always been intrigued by the funkier, more jazz inclined areas of electronic production.
A stint with Ninja Tune marked the pair out as a sharp pioneers, capable to matching drifting, down tempo electronica to more languid climes.
Returning with new EP 'Simple', the duo have decided to look back on Poland's fertile jazz scene. Searching through the crates, the pair have amassed an intimidating array of samples, sounds and other devices.
The results are intriguing. A times feeling like a breaks-oriented Boards of Canada, their work is deeply cerebral yet never quite loses its emotional appeal.
Stripped from the album, 'Soundtrack' is at times deeply moving. The accompanying visuals are directed by Natalia Nguyen, and perfectly match the retro-Futurism of the music.
