R I T U A L want to let their music speak for itself. But when their output is as strong as new EP 'From The City To The Wilderness' that's perhaps understandable.
Divine electronic pop with an artful taste, standout track 'Josephine' has been given the visual treatment by Matthew J Watkins.
The striking clip seemingly rose from the group's desire to remain in the background. The director explains: "The band had expressed a desire not to be in the video. I pitched an idea that obscured them through vintage circuit bent analogue video tools to create a layer of charm, nostalgia and mystique."
The results make use of degraded technology, with the spectacular imagery utilising some unusual effects:
"Over the last decade or so I had become fascinated by the demise and misuse of defunct analogue media that I had grown up with. My band recorded on tape, I started circuit bending old Casio's and I had become interested in analogue video distortion. Whilst I was experimenting at college, there was a quality struggle with formats such as Hi8 and Super VHS; I learnt through experience the difference between 'consumer' media and high-end cinematic tools. Those formats soon disappeared and were replaced by HD DSLR's, which do come a lot closer to cinema quality. However the character and distortion inherent in old analog video brings its own charm and nostalgia."
