With the music industry in a continual state of flux, 2014 has witnessed a new surge of energy rippling through the DIY scene.
Bands are abandoning established routes, taking control of their careers and doing things for themselves. In the case of Plastic Mermaids, that means literally soldering their equipment together.
Discussing the band’s home-made studio guitarist/producer Jamie Richards said: "I've made all sorts of analogue gear and I'm half way through building myself a huge mixing desk.”
“It's been hard though. There's a big learning curve [and] some stuff sets on fire. On more than one occasion I've gone to make a cup of tea only to return to a room full of smoke. I'm too far down the line to stop now though, and every time I plug something in and hear how great it sounds I'm reminded to persevere: I'm building myself the studio I could never afford, and I haven't electrocuted myself. Yet.”
Debut EP ‘Dromtorp’ is out now, but to finish the year Plastic Mermaids are ready to unveil their new video. ‘Saturn’ isout now – hugely imaginative, it's a feast of odd sounds, about-turns and whimsical lyrical observations.
