Premiere: Lisbon – ‘Native’

Viral success story return home...

Youth is a period of risk taking, of making a wish and following it through.

Lisbon are small-town dreamers made good, a group of friends from Whitley Bay who share a common love of music.

Becoming a viral success – the band have more than 40,000 followers on SoundCloud – they recently decided to return home to decide their next step.

New single 'Native' is packed with pop hooks, glistening synthetic production and colossal ambition. One to file alongside Vaults or Years & Years in those 'Tips For 2015' lists, it's a sugar-sweet confection, one built to be sung back by thousands of fans.

For the video, Lisbon took things back to where they started. Shot in Whitley Bay, frontman Matthew Varty explains that the band wanted the local area to feature "heavily in the video, as does Newcastle. Anything from our city's famous bridges, to the Rendezvous Café, is crucial in the depiction of the local area, the latter is a serious part of Whitley's culture, and our own personal upbringings."

As for the song itself, Matthew explains: "Conceptually, it's about ambitions, your aims in life. It's about being out of your comfort zone in the pursuit of success, and the will to exceed expectations. Lyrically it's about being 'far from home', being thrust into new challenges and pressures and having the motivation to deal with them. Personally, the lyrics reflect the ambitions of myself, Joe, Gaz and Wrighty, you just have to give it a chance and you never know what you'll come out with."
