Premiere: Espher – ‘To The Sky’

Manchester producer continues to impress...

Intense yet sonically beautiful, Espher's approach is akin to the post-punk era.

Continually pushing himself to create new sounds, the rising producer seems to look at the area around him and place probing questions.

New EP 'Insular' is a superb introduction. Beginning and ending in isolation, the material explores a very rare kind of overwhelming love.

"It’s an EP about the transformative effect falling in love has on every aspect of life, positive and negative," he says. "It’s about the battle between logic and your heart."

Espher utilises the environment around him. The producer is almost continually recording, a kind of sonic urban geographer for a city which is still coming to terms with its modern identity.

"I sample a lot of the sounds now from the environment around me," he explains. "The background atmospherics on the EP are field recordings made along my journeys. I find it important to create a space for the music to exist within, almost a blank canvass in which to build upon."

New cut 'To The Sky' comes close to straight up techno, while also recalling the early electronics of, say, Cabaret Voltaire. It's a curious track, difficult to place yet itchily contagious.

'Insular' is forthcoming on Tru Luv.
