The concept of the 'power trio' has rather been lost in rock music.
Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and more set out the template, a furious mixture of blues and experimentation.
Emperor Yes take the format and run with it. Tapping into the lysergic, psychedelic roots of the power trio, the band take glistening pop melodies and explode them into other dimensions; picture the wide-eyed splendour of Wayne Coyne pit against the ambition of '2001: A Space Odyssey' and you're half way there.
New album 'An Island Called Earth' was recorded at Ash Gardner's House of Strange Studios in London, with intergalactic voyager Jeremy Warmsley (also of Summer Camp) seated at the controls.
Due for release on Alcopop! Records, the LP is preceded by the video for 'Monkey King'. Extravagantly imaginative, this is a feast for the eyeballs.
Watch it now.
'An Island Called Earth' is out now.
