Premiere: Elle Osborne – ‘Come Write Me Down’

A tradition song re-worked in a modern environment...

Beneath the bright lights of modern Britain deep roots extend. The traditional cultures of these isles may be painted over, but if you scratch the surface then something inspiring may just pop up.

Elle Osborne's new album is folk in the loosest sense, with 'It's Not Your Gold Shall Me Entice' taking a poetic view of these lands.

Out on November 6th, it features contributions from Alasdair Roberts and members of Glasgow-based acid folk act Trembling Bells.

Clash is able to premiere the video for album focal point 'Come Write Me Down'. It's a hazy folk hymnal, one rooted in the locality of East Sussex but with a universal theme.

Elle explains: '"Come Write Me Down" is the one traditional song on the album, which comes originally from The Copper Family of East Sussex. The video was filmed on the South Downs, just north of the Copper Family's home village of Rottingdean, where the song has been sung for centuries. This is the song that the album title – 'It's Not Your Gold Shall Me Entice' – comes from. It's just me playing fiddle and cello. Like a lot of the traditional songs I sing, I've never not known this song; I just absorbed it growing up."
