Calan Mai is an Australian artist now based in Manchester, the unfamiliar surroundings seeming to spark something new in his music.
Real name Jordan Lawrence, his warm, emotive songwriting comes with organic folk hues, but is filtered through an electronic haze.
Currently receiving plaudits, Calan Mai will support Band Of Horses at their epic Manchester show this coming Thursday (July 7th).
Ahead of this, Clash is able to share new track 'Cup'. It's a beautifully simple work, with its immediate melody disguising the complex lyrical wordplay.
The songwriter – real name Jordan Lawrence – explains: "'Cup' is about being alone. It’s about that last-ditch feeling of panic that sinks in when you lose a person – that sort of fight or flight instinct that says ‘don’t let them go, make them stay’. In a way 'Cup', like the other songs on the EP, focuses on the danger of turning people into homes, places into people. The song isn’t really personal – it’s universal. It made sense to bring friends into the recording process. I didn’t want to sing this song alone."
