Sometimes the simplest ideas are the most effective.
Ben Watt's new cut is the perfect example of this. Sweetly poetic and sharply defined, 'Between Two Fires' (out on April 8th) details the end of a relationship in stark, simple terms.
Brighton film-maker and photographer Edward Bishop has stepped in to work on the visuals, and the results are deeply affecting.
"It’s an end-of-relationship song," says Watt, "someone driving away from the past, struggling to apportion no blame and resolve things in their own mind. As a visual idea, I asked Edward to bonnet-mount a camera at night and just drive out of a busy city towards somewhere remote in the middle of nowhere."
The clip opens in Brighton, and ends on the Sussex Downs. Edward Bishop explains: "There’s an honesty in the words, so we shot the performance part at home, stripped his piano back to its skeleton, lit the room with simple flickering light, and captured Ben in three quick direct takes."
