BC Camplight is – by his own admission – "the guy who blew it."
Lauded by his contemporaries, the songwriter released two studio albums of richly diverse psych-pop. Allied to this, though, was a self-destructive bent which pushed him to the margins, far away from the limelight he so richly deserved.
Working with The War On Drugs and guesting on Sharon Van Etten's album 'Epic', the songwriter kept his head above water, buying time to reflect on his next move.
Now based in Manchester, BC Camplight has assembled a coterie of local musicians, with the results gathered on new album 'How To Die In The North'.
Due to be released on January 19th via Bella Union (pre-order LINK), it's an album which combines the songwriter's strengths (a literate lyrical flair, gorgeous arrangements, soothing vocals) with his weaknesses (songs which speak of excess, insecurity and self-sabotage).
New cut 'Just Because I Love You' has a soft poetry worthy of Burt Bacharach, a glowing psych-pop arrangement taken from the hymn-sheet of The Zombies, say.
The accompanying visuals are beautifully shot but uncompromising. Showing a young girl as she tries to escape the memories of a past relationship, the vivid, gold-hued imagery contrasts with her spiralling emotions.
