There's a new energy running through guitar music.
After a period in the doldrums, a series of British groups have emerged with a fresh take on early 90s alt rock. Tattered, frayed at the edges, the atmosphere is less one of re-creation than of resurgence, renewal.
MUST are amongst the latest bands to head in our direction. A London based four piece, each song is heavy on tumbling, fuzzed up riffs and blissful harmonies, fusing the rough with the smooth, the sweet with the sour. Have a listen to 'The Devil Lives'.
Lasting for little more than two and a half minutes, this is perfect pop territory – albeit one where Stock, Aitken and Waterman are replaced by Mudhoney, Meat Puppets and Teenage Fanclub. The video is sheer Americana, but viewed from the wrong side of the tracks.
