The 90s – so much to answer for.
Often lambasted as a dodgy remix of everything which had gone before, the decade produced some startlingly original slices of hip hop. It’s the mid 90s G-Funk era which seems to inspire Hudson Mohawke, the enormously talented young producer from Glasgow whose Warp aligned debut album scorched ears earlier this year.
Taken from said, ‘Joy Fantastic’ is a smooth slice of hip hop. With Olivier Daysoul’s vocals riding over shimmering synths, the track sounds like Warren G sluiced through a post Stones Throw mindset.
At once forward thinking yet containing numerous nods to the past, ‘Joy Fantastic’ turns retro-futurism into a dancefloor activity.
Directed by Konx-Om-Pax, the man behind Hudson’s artwork, the new video is a visual feast. Hope you’re hungry…
