Mark Everett – best known as 'E' – has always thrived on honesty.
A casual glance at Eels' back catalogue tells you that this is a songwriter who doesn't hold back, who – to borrow a trite but accurate phrase – pours his soul into his music.
New album 'The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett' bears witness to this. Out on April 21st, it's a beautifully orchestrated work, one which matches E's soft voice against plaintive, mainly acoustic, instrumentation.
Stripped from the upcoming full length, 'Mistakes Of My Youth' finds E in an introspective, melancholic mood. The video for the track takes the theme literally, following a young boy around an American town.
Almost dripping with nostalgia, with pained regret, it's a wonderfully engrossing clip.
Watch it now.
