Drop Nineteens were always a difficult band to categorise. American musicians drawn more to the cultural conduits of the UK than their Stateside contemporaries, their catalogue feels slightly out of place. Often tagged to shoegaze, in reality it contains an independence of thought that has helped their music to survive, and thrive in the 21st century.
Picked up by a whole new audience, Drop Nineteens are being reappraised. It helps, then, that the reformed band surprised fans with a brand new album last year – the exceptional, wonderfully creative ‘Hard Light’.
Lauded by critics and embraced by their followers, the record saw Drop Nineteens refuse to follow the pack – doubling down on the unique facets of their sonic individuality, it produced a ferocious blend of noise-enabled melody.
Album highlight ‘Tarantula’ uses a title steeped in rock lore – it was the name of Dylan’s impenetrable book, after all.
