Abnormal Sleepz Shares Exceptional ‘Norf Freestyle’

A bold new voice from Manchester...

What is it about Manchester?

The city is a hub for underground talent right now, with everyone from Aitch to IAMDDB, Children Of Zeus to Zeph overhauling perceptions of the city's music scene.

Pushing its guitar heritage to one side for a minute there's a newgen batch of talent forging a fresh path for others to follow.

Take Abnormal Sleepz. Fusing his soulful approach with something gritty, incoming debut album 'Kaleidoscope' is a real journey.

Recent single 'Textures' caused a huge stir with its Windrush-themed video, and now he's back with a special freestyle.

Taking things right back to the beginning, Abnormal Sleepz uses little more than a beat and some lyrics to express himself, affording himself space to vent.

"The 'Norf Freestyle' has been a journey of its own," he explains. "Taking us back to the times where all we did was put lyrics to a beat with no care for structure, just straight bars."

"It was almost like a massive vent touching on a number of subjects from life experiences and choices to music always having me in the darkest times with a hint of advice and humbling for those watching from a distance. This was to showcase and show people that Sleepz still really raps. Take away melodies, concepts and structure and just put a mic in the room and let me say my piece. This song was like the equivalent to going to the gym and flexing your muscles."

We're able to share the video, and it's a kind of split personality deal, with two different versions of Abnormal Sleepz let loose around the world.

"The video concept is based around a continuous timeline of loads of random events happening surrounding two versions of me," he says. "I'm chasing myself whilst trying to run away from myself which could be a metaphor for running from your fears instead of facing them. Its open for interpretation however I think I wanted to demonstrate the constant battle we have with ourselves as humans everyday."

"We all have different layers and when you separate them it can sometimes seem like your two totally different people. Truth is you cant run from yourself, or your own fears. Even when you lose yourself you always end up back in the same predicament. Embrace your layers, and yourself but more importantly know yourself and be honest with it."
