On the eve of the release of the first album in over four years from his band Thirty Seconds To Mars, we meet the actor/singer that has remained an enigmatic and compelling talent whose prudent pursuits have consistently afforded him a pan-generational iconic status for almost a quarter of a century.

Thirty Seconds To Mars have risen to become stadium-filling, anthemic heroes to a legion of fans who favour a more profound and progressive brand of rock, despite the traumatic trials that threatened to ruin them. On screen, Leto shines in a range of immersive and stimulating roles from an intriguing list of visionary films including Fight Club, American Psycho, Requiem For A Dream, Chapter 27, the imminent Blade Runner 2049, and Dallas Buyers Club, for which he picked up the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of transgender AIDS patient Rayon.

“I like to be challenged,” he tells Clash of his attraction to projects. “I like to be provoked creatively, and I like an opportunity that pushes me to a new place and teaches me something. I love to learn, and it’s a good opportunity when you’re doing these things to be slightly off balance, to be on uncertain creative grounds… And it’s not just the result, it’s the process of how do you do these things, how do you prepare for these things, how do you craft and figure out the production and the technical side of things that is part of the journey itself.”

Also in this potent issue are features with Gucci Mane, Marilyn Manson, Lil Peep, Vanessa White, Moses Sumney, Denzel Curry, Jessie Reyez, Tom Grennan, Paul Anderson, Jimmy Cliff, Wyclef Jean, Ty Dolla $ign, Bootsy Collins, and much more.
