Win Tickets To Strummer Of Love

...then win a guitar designed by Damian Hirst!

Clash are getting increasingly excited about the one-off extravaganza that is Strummer of Love, the 5,000 capacity shindig celebrating Joe Strummer’s life and passions.

Not only have Clash already packed our dancing shoes and some cheeky records for our DJ sets deep in the woods but we’ve even found time to produce a tasty little festival programme that you’ll receive on the way in.

But that is just the start of the collector’s items. Iconic British artist Damien Hirst has announced the unveiling of two brand new pieces of art that are to be included in an online public raffle in aid of charity Strummerville, The Joe Strummer New Music Foundation. The artwork has been produced to commemorate the 10th anniversary of legendary Clash front-man Joe Stummer’s tragic death in 2002.

As an unsparing and thoughtfully relevant gesture, Hirst has painted and modified a Fender Telecaster Electric and an Eastwood acoustic guitar in a typically novel fashion. The Fender has taken on a funky look with dots of acrylic paint bouncing around it, whilst the acoustic piece adapts a spin-painting technique using a household gloss to achieve the end result.

Tickets, available from www.strummeroflove.com/raffle, are priced at £20 each and all profits procured will be donated to the charity. And those lucky enough to be attending this summer’s first ever Strummer of Love Festival, where the winning tickets are to be drawn live on stage by former Clash guitarist Mick Jones, will have the opportunity to enter for just £10.

Before the festival takes place in Somerset over the weekend of August 17th, the general public will have the chance to see the prizes on show at London’s ‘Other Criteria’ gallery on New Bond Street, where they are displayed for all to see in the gallery’s windows.

“I love Strummerville and have supported it since it started ten years ago as it gives kids and adults the opportunity and platform to create and record music for a wider audience”, said Hirst. “I hope that by donating these two guitars much needed funds can be raised to help carry on supporting the brilliant work they do.”

Strummer of Love, the Joe Strummer 10th Anniversary Festival, is a one-off opportunity to celebrate the life and legacy of Joe Strummer. In recent years, ‘Strummerville’ has been a traditional feature at Glastonbury, providing punters with intimate acoustic sessions along with a warm, friendly and chatty atmosphere around a campfire burning brightly day and night. But what with the mega-festival’s scheduled break for 2012, Strummerville organizers felt that the natural step to take was to stage a festival of their own, especially as this year marks a decade since Strummer’s untimely death.

The 5,000-capacity festival will take place in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Blackdown Hills and features an impressive line-up including The Pogues, Seasick Steve and Roots Manuva. Mick Jones and the Justice Tonight Band will close the festival, in what ought to be a memorable and emotional set.
