Wilco For Green Man

Exclusive: Organiser talks to ClashMusic

There’s nowt as weird as folk, they say, and there’s nowt as weird and wonderful as the folk music on show at the annual Green Man festival.

Named after the pun in cult British horror movie The Wicker Man, Green Man is hosted by cult duo It’s Jo And Danny. Now better known for the organisational ability than their music, the duo present one of the most unique events in the festival season.

The first acts for 2009’s instalment of folk fun have been announced. Grammy award winning group Wilco are set to headline the event, bringing their forward thinking Americana with them.

Formed by Jeff Tweedy in the aftermath of Uncle Tupelo’s split , Wilco have gone on to become one of the most prestigious names in American music.

Joining them this year will be one of the breakthrough successes of last year – songwriter Bon Iver. The group, led by singer Justin Vernon, released their phenomenal debut album ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ in 2008 and it became a stunning word of mouth success.

This year Green Man has expanded yet again to include over 100 acts spread over five stages.

Festival organiser Fiona Stewart had the following to say:

“We’re really excited about this year’s festival. As well as confirming some fantastic acts like Wilco and Bon Iver, we’ve got DJ’s keeping the party going through the night. The wishing tree will make a return as will the nightly dusk till dawn bonfire to bring more magic moments to the festival, and this year some new hidden surprises around the site this year including Einstein’s Garden. This will present green issues in a fun, informative and engaging way and we hope encourage people to raise their awareness of environmental issues and to make changes to their lifestyles.”

“There’s also a larger children’s area called Little Folk, and we’re also introducing a new holiday ticket where for an extra £30 people can spend a week at the beautiful Glanusk Park site and enjoy a range of activities including fishing, hiking, riding and canoeing available from the surrounding Brecon Beacons.”

Green Man takes place between August 21st – 23rd.
