Last night (July 23, 2009), Clash sat on a panel of judges to decide which band – from a line-up of six finalists – would open the main stage at this year’s Green Man Festival. Ladies, gents: t’was the Green Poll grand final, and the Camden Monarch was rammed from side to side, back to front with eager ears and beer-sipping lips.
Alongside Clash: top dogs from two of the country’s very finest indie labels, Bella Union and Moshi Moshi. Needless to say that the winner would really have to impress. And they did. And that band was We Aeronauts.
With only 15 minutes to impress, every one of the six bands was up against it to make a brilliant first impression, and while some did indeed leave their mark, it was the Oxford-via-Brighton eight-piece that really shined the brightest. Their folk-tinged arrangements are high on creativity, on boisterous energy and clasp-along accessibility, but most importantly of all, perhaps, they display signs that they could grow and grow, one day becoming a band of great acclaim.
Below is a video of the band performing their song ‘Chalon Valley House Band’, from earlier in 2009.
