Footage of Aphex Twin performing live in Poland has emerged via Warp Records.
Ten years. Ten, long, arduous, tedious years.
It’s been a full decade since Aphex Twin last released a studio album. Of course, the fact that ‘Drukqs’ was a twin disc collection has helped soothe fans, who must have grown used to unusual behaviour by now.
Recent reports indicate that Aphex Twin has signed a new deal with Warp, while live sets have included a sprinkling of new material. Invited to perform in Poland, the producer responded with a set which contained elements of orchestral music.
Re-working the famously distraught ‘Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima’ Aphex Twin tackled material from Steve Reich, Penderecki and more.
At one point unveiling his ‘Remote Orchestra’ the producer’s performances were caught on film. Now Warp Records are pointing fans towards three YouTube clips, which contain short elements of the performance.
Of the three clips, the ‘Remote Orchestra’ section is perhaps the most intriguing (although all three are worth watching). According to Warp:
“Richard James came up with the idea of controlling a 48 piece string section and a 24 strong choir by remote control, using midi controllers, lots of headphones and some remote visual cues, after being commissioned to write some pieces for the European culture congress in Poland. There was only one opportunity for a rehearsal to see if the idea worked, it was in the morning, the day of the concert! This is the result.”
