It’s been a phenomenal year for Northern Ireland’s electro-indie rock three-piece Two Door Cinema Club. In this relatively short time, they’ve gone from playing small clubs around the UK, to winning Ireland’s Mercury Music Prize equivalent the Choice Music Prize album of the year for their debut LP Tourist History, to this: their biggest gig to date at the full to capacity Roundhouse in Camden.
From opening track ‘Cigarettes In The Theatre’, its apparent the rapid transition to selling out larger venues has come naturally for them. The energy through out their 14-song set ignites a massive dance party. ‘Something Good Can Work’, ‘I Can Talk’ and ‘Undercover Martin’ are three of many songs from Tourist History that the crowd sing straight back to the band on stage in this infectious electric atmosphere.
Two new songs receive their live debut this evening: ‘Handshake’ and ‘This Isn’t Home’. The latter, singer Alex Trimble says, “We gonna take a risk now because we only finished this song on Thursday.” It’s an epic track and so well received that the mind boggles to comprehend it was only added to their repertoire two days ago. Contrary to what the title suggests, this track certainly feels like home tonight.
Showing gratitude for the stellar trajectory the band are currently on, bass player Kevin Baird humbly states: “This is the biggest show we’ve ever played and it’s the most special show we’ve ever played. I really mean it. Thank you for being a part of it.”
This trajectory seems set to continue as just recently it took only four hours for them sell out the 5,000 capacity Brixton Academy for their show in June. Two Door Cinema Club are well on their way to perfecting the right combination of indie rock, electronica and pop in great songs. Mix that with the ability to connect with fans during their fantastic live show and it surely means this is one young band that won’t be dropping off the scene any time soon.
