The Drums’ Jonny Pierce is to star in a new ballet alongside Boy George and Mark Ronson.
Well this is bizarre. The Drums are known for producing sublime indie pop, the kind of shimmering, gentle tracks that make you think a C86 revival isn’t such a bad thing after all. Now frontman Jonny Pierce has confirmed his involvement in – of all things – a ballet.
The singer has agreed to participate in a new project alongside acclaimed Royal Ballet choreographer Wayne McGregor and producer Mark Ronson.
The Drums and Mark Ronson are closely associated, with Jonny Pierce having co-written ‘You Gave Me Nothing’ and ‘Lose It (In The End)’ with Ghostface Killah on Ronson’s 2010 album ‘Record Collection’.
The upcoming ballet is titled ‘Carbon Life’ and will seemingly be based on a cycle of nine love songs. Jonny Pierce is on vocal duties, with The Drums’ frontman set to be joined by 80s icon Boy George.
Other artists who have confirmed their involvement include Alison Mosshart of The Kills, Hero Fisher and rappers Wale and Black Cobain.
On the music side, ‘Carbon Life’ has been steered by Mark Ronson and Miike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt with Rufus Wainwright stepping in on orchestration.
‘Carbon Life’ will run alongside ‘Polyphonia’ at the Royal Opera House in London, with the production confirming plans for a six night run. Ticket prices start at just £3 with a top price of £42 – for full information click HERE.
‘Carbon Life’ opens on April 5th.
