The Cure Close Coachella

Goth legends play marathon set

Goth rock heroes The Cure have closed out the Coachella festival in California with a massive set which defied curfew obligations.

The Cure formed out of the post punk movement, retaining the gloom of acts such as Joy Division but adding a flair for drama and a bit of lipstick. Inspiring hordes of similarly dressed fans the band remain beloved in America, where their recent album ‘4:13 Dream’ was a massive hit.

Chosen to close this year’s Coachella festival, the band followed in the footsteps of fellow headliners Sir Paul McCartney, M.I.A. and many more. The desert event was a huge success, with perhaps only Glasvegas having a band time – the group were forced to pull out due to singer James Allan suffering from exhaustion and dehydration.

The Cure took to the stage with a heroes welcome, a fans packed themselves in front of the main stage in order to catch a glimpse of Robert Smith & Co.

The band opened with some of their most downbeat material, before introducing light and shade as the set progressed. Playing a number of tracks from their thirteenth album ‘4:13 Dream’ The Cure also found time for some of their best loved anthems including ‘In between Days’ and ‘Just Like Heaven’.

However the festival organisers were left bemused as the band raced past their allotted time. During a celebratory performance of early single ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ the lights were pulled on The Cure, who reacted furiously.

“They say we can only play one more song – are we fuck,” singer Robert Smith told the crowd. Fans rushed towards the stage as the band continued unplugged, finishing with the appropriate ‘Grinding Halt’.

The Coachella security have been given a hard time over the weekend, with M.I.A. encouraging a massive stage invasion to the discomfort of organisers.
