The Charlatans have paid tribute to their drummer Jon Brookes as the band open their new tour.
Some things just mean more than music. On their recent North American tour, The Charlatans were left devastated when drummer Jon Brookes collapsed behind his kit. Taken to hospital, the musician was later flown home for tests.
Sadly, the drummer is suffering from a brain tumour with treatment to begin immediately. Jon Brookes dropped out of the band’s forthcoming tour, with The Charlatans electing to replace the drummer.
Former Verve rhythm master Pete Salisbury is set to take the place of Jon Brookes, with the band opening their UK tour last night (September 27th).
The Charlatans played a special show as part of Oxjam, a concert series organised by the charity Oxfam. Performing in the tiny Oxfam shop in Dalston, the band paid tribute to their ill drummer.
Speaking to the crowd, singer Tim Burgess explained that the band had been through a lot over the past week. “It’s been a funny couple of weeks. This next one is for Jon. It is called ‘My Foolish Pride’.”
The band showcased material from their new album, including the recent single ‘Love Is Ending’. Alongside this, The Charlatans included material such as ‘The Only One I Know’ and ‘North Country Boy’.
The Oxjam show comes as The Charlatans prepare to launch their latest British tour. The band are set to fulfil their dates, with the tour due to kick off next week.
Happy Mondays and Black Grape legend Shaun Ryder is set to play support, with tickets remaining for most dates.
