One of the prominent figures in world music Taj Mahal is set to travel to the UK for a very special one off date.
Real name Henry Saint Clair Fredericks, Taj Mahal has proved that there is much more to the blues than merely recycling the twelve bar. Adding in elements of jazz as well as Caribbean and latterly African influences, Taj Mahal has proved just how flexible the form can be.
Beginning as a performer in the folk revival, Taj Mahal had a mixed musical education studying from delta blues musicians, playing in a doo wop group and playing with an R’n’B group. Forming the legendary group Rising Sons with Ry Cooder, Taj Mahal entered the rock arena, touring with The Rolling Stones.
His early material is easily categorised as the blues, taking in the influence of childhood neighbour Lynwood Perry, the nephew of the famous bluesman Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup – who actually wrote ‘That’s Alright Mama’.
However the musician soon grew restless and since then his recordings have been a tireless journey around the globe. Playing ‘world music’ long before the term was coined, his ceaseless pursuit has made for fascinating listening.
Taj Mahal gigs in Britain are rare occasions, and this new show looks to be spectacular. Held in legendary house of jazz Ronnie Scott’s, the guitarist will reach back into his repertoire whilst also previewing his new album ‘Maestro’.
With guests including Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Angelique Kidjo, Los Lobos, Ziggy Marley
and others ‘Maestro’ is a suitable tribute to this unique musician.
Taj Mahal will play the following dates:
April
30 London Ronnie Scott’s
May
1 London Ronnie Scott’s
