Over 60 bands and songwriters have pulled out of SXSW 2024.
The Texan festival is now under way, but faces pressure over its military ties. This year, the US Army is a main sponsor, while Collins Aerospace – an arms manufacturer – helped to power some specialised events.
With discomfort growing, Scowl were amongst the first to remove themselves from the line-up, opting to instead play unofficial events across the city. GEL swiftly followed, alongside UK groups such as Lambrini Girls.

Rachel Chinouriri has pulled out, issuing an emotional statement which empathised with the victims of war – both of her parents were child soldiers.
Elsewhere, a wave of cancellations hit the official programming by Music From Ireland. With call-offs mounting, the events can no longer go ahead – artists are seeking spots on unofficial / fringe events around the city.
Blarney native Mick Flannery pulled out on Monday, commenting: “I do not wish to be associated with weapons manufacturers.”
Showcasing bands Gurriers, NewDad, and Cork post-punks Cardinals jointly announced their withdrawals, with other artists following. Curiously, Minister Catherine Murphy – from Ireland’s Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media – is still attending.
