Despite Summer Sundae’s unreliable weather today there is something to be happy about. After kitting ourselves out with wellies we just manage to catch the endings of girl troupe Gaggle. With their flower costumes and cannon vocals we’re left entranced by their performance.
However there is something despicably Wicker Man-like about the group. Quickly as it rains we dip into the hall and find ourselves unwilling to leave it for most of the day. Tunng’s brilliantly quirky folk pop leaves us revitalised while The Fall provides us, not only with doom laden rock but some light relief.
Mark E Smith wanders around the stage tampering with everything in his way, but it’s the band who gives us a real buzz like nothing else we’ve stumbled across today.
And what else did we learn? Diana Vickers can play the trumpet, and sing just as good as anyone on X Factor, A Genuine Freakshow gives us the best new find of the day, and Stornoway leaves us feeling rather empty.
But with today’s line up remaining distinctly alt-folk, we’re relieved to hear Tinchy Stryder’s ‘Number One’ all over the main stage. That is, before The Whip gives us a rave headache we just can’t shake.
