Streets Play Final T In The Park Show

Mike Skinner bows out in style

The Streets have played what could well be their last show at Scotland’s biggest festival T In The Park.

Founded by Brummie garage-poet type Mike Skinner The Streets have gone on to become one of Britain’s best loved bands. The group returned last year with fourth album ‘Everything Is Borrowed’ and the songwriter has claimed that he will only release one more.

Skinner has already begun writing The Streets’ final album. A recent burst of activity saw the singer release three songs in three days via the social networking site Twitter, with more free downloads expected.

Taking to the stage in the Slam Tent, Mike Skinner played a blinding set. Including old favourites alongside new tracks The Streets kept the crowd moving, in an arena normally dominated by big name DJs.

However Mike Skinner appears to be making good on his promise to wind down The Streets after their fifth album. “Next year is probably gonna be the last year for The Streets,” Skinner said.

After a huge chorus of boos from the audience he continued: “No, listen, listen. And you don’t usually do the same festival two years in a row because the promoters don’t like it.

“But I’ve done this loads of times, and this is one of the best festivals, one of the best crowds, I really mean it… this is the only festival I’ve ever been to that has it so hard on the last day.”

Clad in sparkling white trainers Mike Skinner seemed to have little regard for the mud forming outside the tent, with light rain falling earlier in the day. In jovial form, the singer at one point began a glow-stick throwing fight with the audience.

“There seems to be a lot of glow stick throwing,” he said. “But seriously, you need to not throw the glow sticks at me, or we’re not gonna get the enjoyment. So on the count of three, we’re all gonna throw our glow sticks at each other.”

After a tidal wave of neon lights flew through the air Skinner noted that “the first rule of touring in Scotland is, ‘never ask anyone to throw anything’. My nose hurts.”
