The Stone Roses’ Ian Brown and John Squire have performed together at a secret show in Manchester.
Announcing a series of massive headline shows, The Stone Roses confirmed their reformation to the watching world. In the end, though, the gig which cemented the rejuvenated partnership between Ian Brown and John Squire was rather more intimate.
The Hillsbrough Justice Campaign tour aims to support those fighting for more information about the 1989 football tragedy. The Clash’s guitarist Mick Jones is helping helm the tour, with special guests performing each night.
Hitting Manchester’s Ritz venue on Friday night (December 2nd) the one off show contained a very special guest appearance.
The Stone Roses’ Ian Brown and John Squire joined the ensemble, performing together for the first time since December 1995. Part of an all star group, the collective played The Clash cuts ‘Bankrobber’ and ‘Armagideon Time’.
According to Stone Roses lore, a youthful incarnation of the Manchester sneaked into the recording sessions for ‘Bankrobber’. Striking up a lasting friendship with the group, it’s perhaps only appropriate that Ian Brown and John Squire rejuvenate their partnership in such a humble, emotive way.
Later playing ‘Elizabeth My Dear’ from their self-titled debut, Ian Brown and John Squire are now focussed on rather more high profile shows.
The Stone Roses will open their second spell together with three enormous hometown concerts. Taking place in Heaton Park, more than 200,000 tickets for the show were sold inside only a few hours.
Recently confirmed as the headliners for T In The Park 2012, The Stone Roses will launch a full world tour next summer.
